Around 12 years ago a couple of scientists, the future founders of ZenniOptical.com came across wholesale eyewear industry and were shocked to discover the discrepancy between the manufacturing costs and the retail price. While most glasses sold in US & Europe were made in China, hardly any retailer was vertically integrated resulting in a tremendous markup on every level. They embarked on a mission to bring high quality prescription glasses at affordable prices.
Keeping quality as the main focus, they identified the best equipment for the job. After months of research and travelling all over the country to bypass the markups the founders decided to build their own factory. While doing it they implemented a bunch of effective changes bringing the manufacturing costs yet further. The factory they built got award from the government for the green building.
By the mid 2003 the factory and the website were ready to launch. Within 2 hours of opening the virtual doors, a first order from Pacifica, US was received. As the orders poured, the factory grew and it was possible to produce the glasses yet at a steeper discount.
Starting as 19 Dollar Glasses, we changed our name after reducing prices yet further. The name Zenni came as word play on Zen & fancy Italian brands.
With no "middlemen", no retail-space overhead, and practically no advertising budget (it's up to you, our satisfied customers to spread the word about Zenni Optical), we reached our goal of bringing high quality prescription glasses at affordable prices.
Zenni Optical's abundant selection of eyeglasses priced below $7, which includes standard single-vision lenses and anti-scratch coating, has won enthusiasts the web over. From Zenni Optical reviews in publications like The New York Times, Reader's Digest, and Slate to industry blogs like Glassy Eyes and Eyeglass Retailer Reviews, experts applaud their best value-for-your-buck mantra.
