Eat Pumpkin for Eye Health

  • BY Zenni Optical

As an eyecare professional, I often get asked by my patients if there are certain foods that can be incorporated into someone’s diet to improve their eye health.

While no food will eliminate your glasses, many foods can keep your eyes healthy.

Carrots, Oranges, and Pumpkins…oh my!

Eat Pumpkin for Eye Health

These orange food groups are packed with various nutrients, such as Vitamins A and C, and zinc that all slow the progression of macular degeneration and lower the risk of cataracts.

Pumpkins specifically are rich in antioxidants, lutein, and zeaxanthin, as well as fiber. According to the CDC, pumpkins fall between broccoli and brussel sprouts for their nutrient density score. Good nutrition and a balanced diet will keep your eyes healthy.

Be wary of that extra sugar! You won’t get the same benefits from that pumpkin latte or slice of pie, unfortunately. But don’t forget to pick up some orange food on your next grocery run, get into the fall spirit and protect your eyes.
