Disappointing: Not Dark Enough, Too Reflective
4 years agoThese sunglasses are disappointing.
Firstly, the silver color is is not dark enough. You can see right through the shades and see the frame for the corrective lenses, and they aren't even as dark as the $20 fit-over sunglasses you can buy at Walgreens. If I had enough hair to go without wearing a hat on a regular basis this would be pretty annoying. Please bring back the mirrored shade blue or white colors of this, or offer a color with darker tint. Maybe even allow tint on the prescription lenses on the inside. I would even pre-order the mirrored version and wait a couple of months if that's what it takes, since Zenni has no other flip-up wraparounds.
Second: Even with the AR coating on the corrective lenses, the tinted shade does not seem to have any coating, so there is still a lot of reflections when wearing these. I can see the frame of the corrective lenses reflected in the shade while wearing them, that is how bad it is. Considering there are TWO sets of lenses and frames off of which light can bounce around in here and the curved nature of this setup, it's amazing that the tinted shades are so reflective. In one of the pics for my review, you can even see stuff on the walls above the glasses reflected in the shades. This is also exacerbated by the fact that the shades let so much light through to begin with. Just unacceptable.
I ordered the high-index 1.61 lenses, but there is still distortion in my field of view compared to the 950421 with the 1.74 index Trivex lenses, which seem to be about the same width. This may be because the corrective lenses are also a bit "wrap-around", not just the flip-up shade, and the lenses do not seem to account for this. It makes it a bit disorienting to take off my "inside glasses" and put these on for a drive. Maybe I just need more time to get used to it, or maybe it's the nature of the the wrap-around orientation so will give this drawback a pass.
Since these were going to be my "driving glasses", I will just order the mirrored clip-ons for my "inside glasses" and wear a hat when outside, because these are not very effective. If I ever toss my couch potato habits and need sport sunglasses, I will just get goggles. At least until Zenni offers a flip-up wraparound with mirrored or darker shades and backside AR.
